Retro game designs

Hi Springleapers.

With our Retro theme competition’s closing date looming on the 27th of May, we can practically taste the anticipation in the air. I have had a look at the voting stats and it looks like this win will be even closer than our usual competitions. Two designs that are really making a strong play for the top prize are both of the retro video game designs style.

The first retro video game designs that grabs my attention is undoubtedly the It’s on like…, by ModesC. I’m sure you would have heard somebody say, at one point or another, “It’s on like Donkey Kong”. Yep this is indeed a declaration that I have heard many times as a gaming battle begins, or the proverbial gauntlet is thrown down when a friend wants to show me his Chun-Li will kick my Ryu’s ass (chances). I thought that it was a very appropriate name for a design that is entirely based around the beloved character of Donkey Kong. This design seems to be pretty popular thus far and with only 2 days left before we close voting, this could very well be our winner.

Starcraft 2

Starcraft2

Greeting gamers!

Yes indeed the time is almost upon us for the arrival of Starcraft 2.
This is one of these gaming titles that seem to only be whispered about in the deepest shadows but almost felt like it would never arrive, much like its cousin Diablo3 from the Blizzard developers.
However unlike its more infernal counterpart its release is actually a reality that is “close at hand”.
Prepare for another epic war between the Protoss, Terran, and Zerg forces!

The original Starcraft was a massive gaming success and in many ways set a benchmark for strategy games of its time. Ever since then we have been waiting for the sequel which would push the boundaries of the genre. Let’s not kid around this game may have a single player option, but the real power lies in the heavy online multiplayer aspect. Many of you would have heard how Starcraft and its medieval predecessor Warcraft have become online sensations across the world and that in some Asian countries like South Korea the game has even become so popular as to be televised and have regular league competitions. While the mania is still rife here in South Africa it is by no means at the Asian level. However with the latest incarnation of the game with its new battle formats and slicker graphics, could it explode to even greater heights in deep dark Africa…well, no, if our internet connection spread has anything to say about it!

Crysis 2

Crysis 2

Listen up gaming fans, we have a real Crysis on our hands…well Crysis2 that is!

It seems that the gaming community received some rather epic news for the month of April. The long awaited sequel to 2007’s first person shooter Crysis has finally been unveiled by Electronic Arts and Crytek in New York and it aims to set an even higher “bar” in the gaming world than ever before.
Crysis 2 is almost here WOOHOOOO!

Honestly its games like this that make me wanna upgrade my PC. Because honestly if you want to enjoy the new Crysis 2 to its fullest, you better have a PC forged in the hell fires of Mount Doom.
Crysis 2 hopes to take the first person shooter experience one step further with even more enhanced graphics and added depth to the storyline.

If you remember the first Crysis you will remember the combination of breath taking graphics mixed with a fierce fast paced battle setup. I remember running into militant villages with enhanced speed grabbing some poor bastard and using him as a human shield before tossing him at his buddies with my strength mod and then finally cutting them down with very VERY big guns!
Yep, the game play was slick and fast as lightning. Unlike some other first person shooters that seemed to lack in versatility, Crysis gave us something to look forward to, something that hints at the future of warfare….if the human race last that long of course.

gaming console evolution

Nintendo DS school

It’s the gaming console evolution!

While the gaming market continues to grow, accessing a broader age market, as well as social spread, there are a few select individuals who are taking consoles to the next level.
Its time to start embracing the idea of video game consoles in a school environment.

Gaming consoles in a school environment may sound crazy to some. However the overall usefulness of a small console in the role of education is becoming a stronger and stronger option for teachers.
One console in particular is the handheld gaming gadget called the Nintendo DS. The DS has actually been around for quite some time, in fact I think it was released back in 2004, which in gaming years is actually quite some time ago.

However, Nintendo’s new focus on the DS as a platform for education is actually a rather smart move. If you consider the average life span of any gaming console is about 5 years before a better version comes out, what do you do with the thousands of unsold DS systems? Well, find an alternate platform other than gaming of course. The DS is already being used in many different sectors in Japanese life. You can find them used as tour navigators as well as language assists for museums and aquariums. Can you imagine the effectiveness of these gadgets in these new aspects? It’s a whole new world and indeed a gaming console evolution!
