8-bit Bytes Back criteria

Pew Pew….level up…boing boing SPLAT!

Ello ello my Springleaping buddies.

I’m ever so stoked about our latest Springleap.com theme competition. I grew up playing the most classic 8-bit games ever and it has always been a privilege of mine to grow up in a time when games were still in their infancy…I suppose it makes me appreciate modern day uber games that much more. I mean I come from a time when games were simply text based…no graphics. I’m sure some of you will remember the insanity of Zork and even those quirky online games like MUD’s Moosehead Sled….ahhhh those were the days!
So what exactly are the 8-bit Bytes back criteria?

There seems to already be tons of positive feedback from the community about the 8-Bit Bytes Back compo. I couldn’t believe how many members have been waiting for a competition like this to come along. I guess that means we can expect a big turnout in designs for this one.

The art of making 8-bit characters and scenes is, in comparison, much easier to achieve than normal designs. Well at least that is my opinion on the matter. How hard is it to make a 3D character in Photoshop and Illustrator? Pretty much all you need to do is set up a grid with equal sized blocks and simply fill in each block with colour. Once you make an outline it’s pretty easy to tweak the features and of course “colour in” your character. The trick in making a really good 8-bit character comes from experimenting with shapes and finally placing them on a 8-bit scene. I have always found that making the scene was the tricky part….but hey maybe you guys and girls will knock this one out the park without any real issues.

Compared to past theme competitions this one really opens the creative slues gate. We have no real strict 8-bit Bytes Back criteria for what your 8-bit design should look like. The only criteria I feel that you should abide by is actually making sure that you are using 8-bit design techniques. Heck, if you really want to be different why not make a mix of your traditional design with that of 8-bit retro funk.

The world is your 8-bit oyster!

If you would like a bit more info about how to go about creating your very own 8-bit design, why not jump across to this handy tutorial link.

All will be made crystal clear ;)
