Well, Design Indaba kicks off tomorrow for the general public and let me tell you, the atmosphere already feels like a tornado of fire. For designers from all sectors this is the best insightful look into what is rocking the South African design industry at the moment. Many of the trends you will find at this top notch expo will even make an impact on the international world….now that is some serious influence!
While there are honestly too many amazing stores to mention, I felt that I should at least give you my Design Indaba favourites list.
Ok ok, so if you go to Design Indaba 2010 and you don’t get a chance to see anything else but one stand, make your way to the Springleap.com stand to meet the gang. Almost everyone from the HQ will be at the stand at some point or another, including our fearless leaders Eric and Eran.
They are all a great bunch so do come across and show your support, we can’t wait to meet you all.
Plus there will be loads of awesome specials on that you can take advantage of….just rush before we sell out
Other than Springleap.com itself there are a few stalls that I really want to check out, here is my Design Indaba favourites list:
One Small Seed is always on the top of my list. This South African design magazine has been around for many moons and without fail delivers the very best in local and international design. The magazine has become a great hit in the store and customers that are unfamiliar with their mission always gets a full run down from their very own in-store chatter box….yeah thats me of course lol.
Their latest issue should already be ready to go out, so I have no doubt that you will be able to grab an issue at the Design Indaba.
Well well, it looks like time is juuust about up for Faces of Africa.
Tomorrow is the final submission date for this awesome local ‘n lekker theme competition.
Here is my competition feedback so far!
First off I have to say that I am very impressed. I have looked through the submissions and am very happy with not only how many designs were entered, but also that there are some really wicked cool designs amongst them. After the two football theme competitions I have to say I was a tad worried that everybody would be over the whole “African thing”. Luckily I was wrong and some truly cool designs have been submitted.
Another interesting aspect of my competition feedback is the fact that not all of the submissions were from local South Africans. With a theme like Faces of Africa many international designers may find it hard to associate with the overall idea. However we have had a few internationals give it their best shot.
Everybody knows the drill for the Springleap.com t-shirt design competition. You cruise across to our website, create an account, download our template pack, send in your appropriately placed designs, wait for us to ok your design and then hey presto they will be ready for voting. One question that remains is the problem of t-shirt colour. While designers are “limited” to only one colour t-shirt, we are left wondering if future designs will be placed on various different t-shirt colours.
The answer to that question is evolving as we speak.
It first happened with the now famous WolFox design eSempowenis. Originally this design was submitted on a pink t-shirt and even though it was on a difficult colour choice it still made the top spot. Since then eSempowenis has been such a hit that it has been reprinted a few times and has ended up on 4 different colour t-shirts (pink, white, blue and army green). This is, at the moment, the best a design can hope to do in regards to being placed on multiple t-shirts colours.
BWAHAHAHA the Force is strong with this Sad Old Biker.
Man oh man I had to laugh at this ridiculously funny Star Wars inspired Lego photoshoot.
Seriously this photographer has done a stellar job of taking the most well known Star Wars characters and putting them in the most hilarious situations. Sad Old Biker’s Star Wars has got it going on!
This talented photo guru has a deep penchant for making fun of the Star Wars universe. While some of the more conservative fans might not enjoy this, less than serious take on the SW universe, I think that it’s absolutely brilliant.
I just love how he has taken the simple Lego models and made such amazingly funny scenes.
I’m trying to decide which one of his pics I like the most, but I’m seriously having trouble in this regard…they are all just too cool.
Ok ok, so I’ve gone with these 2 as my favourites…for now!
