2010 Saturn Awards

The 2010 Saturn Awards

Greetings movie fans.

Yep the Oscars are on the way and the choices for each individual section have been debated over in every way possible. Of course it’s not over until the fat lady sings when it comes to the Oscars.
I myself am much more interested in the 2010 Saturn Awards which is an awards show that brings together the best in the world of sc-fi, fantasy and horror, which are without doubt my absolute 3 favourite genre.

Every year the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror films, gives its nominations for its very own best of the best. While these guys don’t handle the usual Oscar grabbing volley of dramatic tear-jerkers, they make up for the industry cliché of constant “drama winners” by giving us an awards show that is all about subculture genres. The 2010 Saturn Awards promises to be even bigger this year!

The winners of the Saturn Awards will only be announced on the 24th of June. So we have lots of time to mill over the nominees and their chances. If I heard anything I will certainly keep you informed!

BEST SCI-FI MOVIE
1. Knowing.
2. X-Men Origins: Wolverine.
3. Star Trek. (my choice)
4. Moon.
5. The Book of Eli.
6. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.

Lolcats

Lolcat shoryuken

Hi there peeps.

I enjoy the odd internet craze, however I’m at odds with a relatively new phenomenon known as Lolcats.
The title is pretty self explanatory: Laugh out loud Cats.

Basically what it’s all about is taking photos of cats and inserting funny captions to go along with them.
Some of the Lolcat images are pretty damn funny…others weak and sentimental.
I suppose it depends on what kind of person you are.
I suppose the prerequisites for Lolcat fan’s is a sense of humour and a deep love for furry felines.
Yes indeed, if you are a dog person best skip this one hehe.

There are quite a few sites out there dedicated to Lolcats, but the one I visit the most is Icanhascheezburger. There always seems to be a steady stream of Lolcat power on this site. While often I find the jokes on this site a tad weak, there are always the odd gem that comes through and makes u bust a gut.

hype branding

hype branding

Oh pish posh, how can you suggest eating simple McDonalds… I want Hermes French fries and Burberry burgers!

Confused? I was also..for about 10 seconds. I was having a look at 2 Oceans when I bumped into a mention about an upmarket temporary food stand at some or other fashion week…I care not.
This rather amusing “style upgrade” was merely a pitch to the McDonalds franchise in order to totally rebrand the popular burger joint, by rather utilizing well known high fashion labels.
This is hype branding!

What do you guys and girls all think, do you buy into this hype branding shenanigans?

While I’m sure this kind of thing goes down like Terblanche on horseback in some circles, me and a few buddies express shudders of sickness at this type of hype branding.
Basically in a nutshell we feel it’s a pretentious chunder-fest….technically speaking that is.
While Seth enjoys this kind of thing, I’m a little put off by it honestly!

If anything this makes me dislike the burger brand even more…melding two worlds together that are so different feels like a real brand whoring sham. If you think “unhealthy burger”, does high fashion in any way become associated?? Hell no!

vinyl toys in Cape Town

Toitoy CT

Hello there one and all.

For many collecting vinyl toys goes far beyond being a simple hobby and transcends into the realm of near obsession. I myself had a penchant for funky colourful vinyl toys back when I was living in London and could afford them hehe.
However these days I’m left only buying the ones that really make me sweat. Unfortunately the vinyl toy revolution never hit in SA quite as hard as it did overseas, however there are a diligent few who really push the movement as much as possible.
The issue is that there are very few dedicated spots that sell good vinyl toys in Cape Town. So where do you turn?

Well pretty much as far as vinyl toys in Cape Town goes we are stuck navigating between one or two niche destination stores, which makes things pretty difficult. On the top of my list for vinyl toy destinations is the small “weelie stand” at the V&A Waterfront. Toitoy has been around for quite some time now, but they never fail to impress me with their awesome selection and friendly help. I just wish that one day they trade up and get a full on store dedicated to all things ‘collectably funktastic’ J hehe.
