The Expendables

The Expendables

Explosions, mayhem and a good double tot of napalm!

There has been news of an action movie in the pipeline that is set to blow us away on such a level as to be the creation of a new action classic.
How long has it been since we had an action movie that became iconic? Perhaps the most recent attempt that made us sit up and take notice was Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds, which took a novel spin on the whole Nazi war movie theme. However the latest movie to promise big things is The Expendables, which will be directed and starred in by Sylvester Stallone.

The basic premise for The Expendables is that it is about a team of mercenaries led into some South American country and take out its evil dictator that is making the lives of its people a living hell. The team led by Stallone’s Character, head out on a mission that is supposed to be routine, but along the way all sorts of twist and turns take their mission on a very different course. Ok, so it may not sound overly impressive or even original…hell it sounds like it could be on e-tv’s Friday Action Night LOL. However, it’s not the basic movie plot that draws me to this action flick, it’s the actors that will be supporting Sylvester.

Here is a run-down of the actors we can expect to see:

1. Sylvester Stallone (Barney Ross): The fearless leader of the mercs. He is a master tactician and heart & soul of the group.
2. Jet Li (Yin Yang….how insulting): Is the martial arts master of the group and is unmatched in close combat situations.
3. Jason Statham (Lee Christmas): He is an ex-SAS soldier. Who is a master with any edged weapon.
4. Randy Couture (Toll Road…seriously): demolitions expert and also regarded as the brainy member of the squad.
5. Dolph Lundgren (Gunnar Jensen): An elite sniper who has a boat load of emotional baggage.
6. Terry Crews (Hale Caesarave centurion): Long barrel weapon expert and long standing friend of Barney.

Shoooo, now that is quite the line-up of action stars right there. I’m especially looking forward to Dolph lundgren and Jet Li. While I’m surprised that Jet Li will be playing in the movie, I’m even more so with Dolph, who seemed to have dropped off the big movie radar for quite some time…heck, these days all I ever see him in are poker adverts. It will be very intriguing to see how Stallone pulls off this movie. His character sounds like the stereotypical “Sarge” character, who talks hard, hits hard and has the emotional aptitude of a celery cracker. For the younger movie watcher I’m sure they will be stoked to see Jason Statham, who has become a big part of the action movie scene in the past few years.

There are also a few interesting characters played by unlikely non-actor types. The most well known of these non-actors is WWE superstar Steve Austin, who plays one of the evil henchman called Paine…lol, seriously, what a stupid name, it’s almost as bad as Jet Li being called Yin Yang hahaha.
The other non-actor playing a main role is UFC giant Randy Couture. I have no idea what kind of actor this guy is…never seen him in anything, god knows what kind of performance he will give.

This movie has the right ingredients to be one hellova cool action movie, the question is will it deliver?
With a cast like this it better do so!

RELEASE DATE: 13 August 2010

Duncs.
