Hi there Springleapers.
With the ever impending closure for submissions for the Ye-LOL-ow theme competition. I thought it would be a great idea to reach into the very fabric of what makes a happy t-shirt.
While you might be saying Ye-LOL-ow is as much about humour, as it is happiness…I think that the two are intimately connected.
When I say happy t-shirt, what springs to mind first??
Without doubt the first thing I think of when I hear the words “happy t-shirt”, is the very design we have used on our Ye-LOL-ow theme competition banner. The incomparable Smiley face.
The Smiley face itself has been used since our grandparents were mere whippersnappers.
I tried to check it origins on Wiki, but it seems influence is taken from a vast number of sources.
From what I can surmise the Smiley was “invented”, as the icon we know today, by Harvey Ball.
The Smiley has become a symbol of happiness around the world…it often includes the caption, “have a nice day”. Which I suppose is what it’s all about right J
This legendary icon has been used in loads of movies as well. Remember the Forest Gump muddy t-shirt scene, or how about the sci-fi comedy Evolution? Heck, more recently it’s become mega popular with the release of the Watchmen movie. Although the blood spattered Watchmen Smiley has been around since the mid 80’s.
I’m sure quite a few of you Springleapers will be incorporating the Smiley logo into your submissions for the Ye-LOL-ow theme competition. Just make sure its original ok! Every artist and their dog have their own version or take on the Smiley. Yes indeed!
Yep the humble Smiley face has come a long way and is now synonymous with happy t-shirt designs. It may not be exactly the angle you are going for in the compo, but the whole feeling of the Smiley and what it stands for is a positive starting point.
I can’t wait to see all of your happy t-shirt designs.
Duncs.
