Greetings all.
Yes, music is a varied and constantly growing beast. From the classical music of yesteryear to the electronic synthetics of today’s trance scene….it sure has been one hellova ride.
The question is: where does the trail end? When will we run out of ideas in regards to new original sounds? We can see the result of lazy unoriginal work when we hear remixes of old songs that made it big. It seems everyone and their dog are stealing what was a great thing and trying to make it their own. Sheesh, talk about an insult. There are certain branches of music that are pushing the envelope of popular music and making a sound that is truly NEW. There are very few local South Africans of considerable note that fit this category, but one that I stumbled upon and was impressed with are Pravda23.
What can I say about Pravda23…its electro, it classical, its…well hey, it’s a whole lot of thing’s.
Their music usually starts out with a minimalistic kind of techno, but is soon layered with piano and violin sounds. It’s really intriguing to see an evolution in music, especially so close to home. These guys are really on the threshold of something different. While the sound itself is still in its beginning stages, you can definitely hear that they are on to something.
Perhaps the most awe inspiring aspect of Pravda23 is that their live gigs are a performance. Not just a DJ standing behind a turntable, but an amalgamation of live sounds and instruments.
The fact that they can make a sound work so well with so many variables makes them a group to watch out for. I spoke to one of the guys and he classified his music as ‘house’. I have to say that this is a little bit beyond simple house music…most certainly something entirely different…and I like it!
If you are in Cape Town and would like to hear Pravda23 making some seriously progressive tunes go across to Mrs Pickwicks on Long Street every Saturday in November.
If you like minimalist, crossed with electronic and a hint of classical, this show will definitely broaden your horizons.
You never know, maybe this will be the kind of music that our kids listen to in the future.
Oh and cruise across to their website where you can listen/download their music for FREE. Thats might kind of them.
Duncs.
