SANCTUARY

Greeting one & all.

The thing about manga is that it is such a wide and varied medium for literature, that it’s honestly very difficult to have enough time to read it all. Likewise it’s a tad difficult because most of it hasn’t even been subbed into English. The result is that in Western circles we are only privileged to see a drop in the proverbial ocean of what is actually available. The Sanctuary manga is a hardcore politically fuelled tour de force, whose two main protagonists are childhood friends who managed to survive the Killing Fields of Cambodia. The fact that they are friends is where the similarities between Akira Hojo and Chiaki Asami begin to dissipate.
Asami enters the high-powered world of the Japanese bicameral legislature, aiming to become the Diets youngest member, whilst establishing a party that represents the younger people of Japan. Hojo on the other hand decides to take the opposite road to the top, when he decided to become part of the evil underworld of the yakuza.
