Last night I watched a movie that really surprised me with its multi-layered complexity.
I had heard about The Fountain from a few friends who sang its praises very highly…however the subject matter sounded a bit ambiguous, so I jumped at the chance to check it out.
The Fountain is about 3 overlapping stories all taken from different section of human history.
The first section (Past) is set in 16th century Spain where the protagonist captain Ariel is a conquistador in the service of the queen, who will soon be tried as a heretic by the evil Grand Inquisitor. The queen sends Ariel on a mission to the New World in order to find the mythical tree of life which is in the heart of the Mayan civilization.
