Crushed Art

Crushed Art

Hello one and all.

I reckon I surf around the net quite a bit more than the average person. I’m constantly on the lookout for the best and most bizarre art available online. Most of the time I feel inspired by artwork and then feel compelled to tell you all, so that you in turn can be inspired and go forth to create your own unique artwork.
However, on the occasion I stumble across artwork that I just don’t understand….or at least just don’t get the point of.
Today I have an example of this type of art, Crushed Art is the name and understanding…is my aim.

CrushedArt is located at the Takeaway Gallery in Reading (UK), where you can grab whichever piece of crushed can art that takes your fancy.
So how exactly is this artwork created, you may ask. Well the artist takes photographs of various crushed cans and then prints them out in order to use 300gsm artist canvas and uses long lasting pigment ink, in order to achieve the right effect. The next step requires the artist to varnish the artwork and let it dry, he then applies a secondary coat of gloss over the can image which gives it an embossed look.
The second layer gives the can depth and enhances the handmade impression of the piece.

Ok, so now that we have got the technical info of Crushed Art out of the way, we can focus on the most important question: why?
I guess the most obvious answer to this is ‘why not?’
In all honesty everybody in the world has their own idea of what they consider art with worth. For me this kind of art does nothing. However, that is just my opinion. I once ripped of Jackson Pollock’s abstract impressionist artwork…which is very highly recognized around the world.
But crushed cans? I don’t understand the appeal…if somebody can fill me in on what I’m missing, please, do share.

Possible scenarios:
1. Somebody gets sentimentally attached to their favourite beer can that they were holding when they popped the question to their beloved girlfriend.
2. Alcoholic decides to give up the booze and decides to make a memorabilia artwork of his final drink.
3. Young lady escapes sledgehammer wielding murderer when he slips and falls on a well placed can of Fanta. Saviour gets the Crushed Art treatment.
4. Billy Joe wins the annual Beer Can Crushing Competition 2009 and preserves a precious memory with the help of Crushed Art.

Honestly there is no end to this fantasy list.

In all seriousness, if you dig this artwork, go for it!
Who am I to tell you this artwork is sucky…I love Japanese manga artwork and plenty of people loathe that too.

Yeh, I second that Duncan. Maybe it would be better if the artist concerned released a booklet on how to crush cans , step by step. Maybe for recycling or other.. hehe. Anyway looks pretty flat to me.
