Telana Simpson the brains behind an innovative trading movement called One Match Stick has recently joined forces with Springleap.com, a t-shirt design competition site based in Cape Town, South Africa.
What is One Matchstick?
Telana Simpson is trading a single matchstick up in value until she aquires an item of enough value to trade it for an office. She will then use this office space to mentor other up and coming small business start-ups.
Telana started trading in 2006 with one match stick and at this point in time she is doing her tenth trade, 375 Springleap.com t-shirts! Her last trade was for a party for 150 people.
WOW!
The One Matchstick T-shirt Challenge is a fresh concept, made possible by the adorable Telana Simpson. Taking an exhilarating adventure anywhere in South Africa to make the trade and even considering anywhere in the world if the trade is right. Coming straight out of Johannesburg, South Africa, Telana has her own company ‘Inner Coaching’ which offers a mentoring program hence why she needs the office space. Telana has her Honours in Psychology and her passion at present is to succeed in her One Matchstick voyage.
So the hellish winter months have almost left us in peace. We eagerly await the arrival of spring and the wonderful burst of colour this season brings to our lives.
While I noticed that this winter many people tried their best to wear bright colours and try to offset the usual all consuming morbidity of winter oppression, the darker colours still prevailed and kept us all gloomy and staring at the ground.
However, spring is right around the corner and I have seen plenty of brave folks taking advantage of the brief glimpses of sun to show off their more luminescent wardrobe. Fashion trends spring…here we come!
What can we expect this summer season from the numerous fashion houses who will jostle for our dosh?
Well the official colour for this spring is yellow….big surprise LOL. Honestly, if they had been more specific or chosen something slightly original I would have sat up and taken notice….but yellow? It has to be one of the most obvious spring/summer colours of all time. It’s like 90% of Ferraris you will see in your life, drumroll, its red…OMG its frigging reeeeeeed! At any rate yellow it is. From acid yellow to smooth and chunky custard yellow, anything goes.
Fashion trends spring is certainly going to be one yellow submarine of an affair.
There is little that is more engaging than a skimpily clad, laser rifle toting heroine, ploughing her way through green alien blood and giant 12 eyed monsters, yet the icon of the powerful female is an ancient theme. Modern popular culture and Science fiction seems to be increasingly obsessed with the female and its role as initiator and liberator, a mantle that was accepted largely in the ancient worlds of mythos and ritual.
Innovation is a key factor in design when it comes to renewable energy in Africa. Saying this a few of the top designers of the eco industry have come together and graced the African continent with a innovative design that has me waiting with trepidation. The FLAP project short for Flexible Light And Power sees leading local designers from Portablelight , PopTech and Timbuk2 coming together and working on The Solar Satchel.
A device ‘completely off the grid’ this otherwise ordinary messenger satchel is powered by what looks like a five by thirty centre metre solar panel that is able to power a two watt bulb as well as a USB that can be used for charging a multitude of gadgets like radios and cell phones. With the project still in a ‘research’ phase in Ghana ,Kenya and Uganda alike you can keep up to date with Erik Hersman on apparent feasibility at@WhiteAfricanor @AfriGadget. Just a quick note, Erik is one of the founders of AfriGadget and will play a vital role in the research team as he will be the ultimate ‘decider’ with regards to potential users.
I wish the team the best of luck and hopefully we’ll be seeing some awesome self powered back packs that’ll be commercially available.
