Today’s blog will undoubtedly interest all of the video gamers out there.
Hold the press, the latest gaming console is due to be released. It’s a, it’s a…..errr another Playstation 3 from Sony.
Confused? Don’t be. I was also a tad surprised when I heard about it.
It seems that Sony has released a new slim version Playstation 3.
We as video gamer’s are all very aware of the ongoing battle between the Microsoft Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii and the Sony Playstation 3.
Every few years, in seemingly close succession, a new range of gaming consoles are released to the public and a new round of the gaming console war erupts.
The video game industry has progressed in leaps and bounds since the 80’s and these days the industry is worth many millions of dollars worldwide. Every company of course is determined to gain you affection and get a bigger slice of the gaming console pie.
In this last round of the gaming console war Microsoft and Nintendo have outshines Sony in quite a serious way, much to the horror of the Sony big wigs, who arguably won the previous console war.
The Playstation 2 was a remarkable machine and had a huge variety of games to choose from, the Microsoft Xbox seemed to many individuals to be slightly lacking. My honest opinion is that the Xbox was an overall better gaming console than the Playstation 2…but hey that’s just how I feel, I enjoyed many nights of kickass gaming on our house Xbox.
This time around I have to say that I truly enjoyed the Playstation 3, which was not only a monster of a console, had a wicked awesome navigation system, but also had pretty much the cheapest Blu-Ray player around (on its release). The Xbox 360 on the other hand has supposedly got a weaker graphics card and processor chip, which begs the question, why has it been more popular.
It seems that the answer lies in the Playstation 3’s price.
At the moment the original Playstation 3 has a selling price of around R4500, with Xbox 360 selling at about R3500. With this latest slim style Playstation 3 the price has been cut dramatically, so hopefully we will see the price settling around about the same as the Xbox 360.
The new Playstation 3 gaming console is 32% smaller and drinks about 34% less power than its chunkier predecessor.
Many moons ago Sony released a slim version of the Playstation 2 which added some serious oomf to the console sales. It seems that Sony is going for a similar gamble this time. But is it too little too late?
Personally at this stage I would not rush out to buy this new console, because I know that the next generation consoles will be due for release in less than 2 years time…that is if the 5 year gaming console life span trend continues.
What do you all think? Is the Playstation 3 slim version a legitimate gaming console to consider, or would you rather go for the Xbox 360?

I would seriously consider to get the slim PS3. I currently own a Xbox 360 and although it does offer a lot of value for money, it seems to break quite often for no apparent reason.
I first experienced the RRoD and replaced my console under warranty. Last week, my console broke again. This time it’s not under warranty. Unacceptable.
You cannot compare an Xbox to a Playstation 2. The fact that the PS2 is still running for so long proves what a brilliant console it is.
If you going to buy an Xbox, you compare it with a PS3 not a PS2.
PS3 slimline has already sold a million units and when Sony releases their motion controller next year, they will be #1 again.
