Green Point Strike

Stadium Fiasco

Hello everyone,

With regards to a Cape Argus article on July the 1st regarding the Green Point Stadium and its completion.

Work on the Green Point stadium would be affected in the coming week when workers set themselves down to a strike following a wage dispute according to The National Union of Mine Workers. The morning of Tuesday the 30th saw the South African Federation of Civil Engineering Contractors faced with a strike notice, after negotiations failed on Friday. The strike started on Wednesday this week and will continue indefinitely said spokesperson for The National Union of Mine Workers, Lesiba Seshoka.

According to Andrew Fanton, the on-site contractor for Murray and Roberts who is directly involved with the construction and refurbishment of the Green Point Stadium, said that he did not expect any major setbacks on the project and work would carry on as usual.  A statement later made by Mr Fanton declared that no notice of a strike had been made, with him also saying that a lot of the workers were not even affiliated with The National Union of Mine Workers.

At a time when our country in general will be under scrutiny by many of the global powers that be, can we really afford little skirmishes like these? What I find interesting is that this whole affair was in my opinion conveniently prevented by the lack of workers at a key project affiliated with The National Union of Mine Workers. Good managing or fluke?

I think a huge sigh of relief will be in order when the stadium is finally complete.

Love and Peace
