Today I thought I’d take a look at classic t-shirts.
What exactly makes a classic t-shirt…classic????
When I think of this particular genre of t-shirt design I instantly think of those old Smiley designs, or perhaps those quirky t-shirts like the one that says, “I’m with stupid” and then a rather helpful arrow pointing at the person next to you.
Silly, funny, classic.
Although saying that I make it sound that only funny t-shirts fit into the classic t-shirt category, which is completely untrue.
Another prime example are old band t-shirts such as Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, The Rolling Stones and Aerosmith. These designs have become t-shirt classics through their enduring popularity in the music world. So much so that these bands become iconic of an era and become concretized in our idea of what “retro classic” t-shirts really are. People love wearing their favourite band t-shirt from when they were young because it speaks volumes about the kind of person you are.
Well there is an exception. Iconic bands that become classic t-shirts and then get accepted by younger generations as being “cool”, seem to be on the rise. The perfect example would be The Ramones (I’m sure Alex will agree), which I see all over the place these days, being worn by kids who probably know nothing about the band. It’s rather sad actually.
