In a world that is full of companies that just want to make a product that is cost effective and easy to sell at a mark up, it’s awesome to hear of companies that are trying to give back to the world.
One such company that I bumped into at the Design Indaba 2009 was Give it bag, who are taking materials that would otherwise be discarded and using them to create a unique and ecologically viable product.
Give it bag is a Cape Town based company that takes grain bags, (such as used tea, rice, salt bags) recycles them and uses them to create beautifully original bag designs.
These grain bags come from all over the world and are extremely varied…so it’s never the same rehashed material.
Give it bag’s partners in SA collect these bags and then a careful selection process is implemented where the bag prints that look like they will make the coolest visual impact are chosen…there is only a limited amount of a particular material used, making each bag a collector’s item.
The bags are then hand cut with heat cutters, which is done to ensure that the edges of the bags do not fray and compromise the strength of this tough fabric.
The grain bag material is then used together with other fine materials to make super cool and environmentally friendly products…Give it bag is on a mission to save the world, one bag at a time J
