Summer Clothing

speedo idiot

The sun is shining, the birds are chirping and the European holiday makers are getting heat stroke….yep it seems as if that cold snap from the past few days has stuffed off and left us with a wonderful sunny Sunday…fingers crossed that winter doesn’t give us a sucker punch once again.
So now that the summer sun is out its time to don your summer beach armor and get out there and enjoy the sun, surf and beautiful bodies.

So what’s important for your summer clothing this season?
Well hey there are a few things that are just obvious to bring down to the beach like your cozzie and a towel, but let’s list the things that we need to bring and the stuff we need to burn in a steel drum:

Stuff to bring:
Suntan lotion (nobody wants to be a human braai fodder)
Baggies (the wise mans swimming costume)
Large straw hats (these puppies are awesome if you can get away with the look)
Plastic bag (for all your junk…don’t be a messy beast)
Large Umbrella (that is of course unless you want nowhere to hide)
Bottled water (useful for hydration and cleaning various “things”…trust me)
Vinegar for stings (that is if you live in blue bottle hot spots….urine works too, but no thanks)

Stuff to BURN:
Floral shirts (are you Hawaiian or just an idiot?)
Crocs (why do these things still exist?)
Self tan (go natural please ladies…bottle tan looks miff)
Speedos (seriously, go back to Europe)
Jeans (yes you people stay at home)
Styrofoam surf boards (we honestly have enough crap washed up on our beaches)
Portable radios (the beach is an anti-technology zone…NO thumping music)

Ok, so maybe some of the suggestions are pretty arb, but from my experience and other people I know these tips can come in handy.
Summer clothing is honestly ultra important, wear light colours and soft breathable materials….cotton is king.
If you have kids full body rash vest lycra is great for protecting them from the sun and sand burns….kids will be kids after all.
Dark clothing is better left to geeks and Goths who never leave the safety of their respective cages….dark stuff makes a hot summer day that more unbearable.

Another summer clothing tip is to stay away from t-shirts that have large box prints…you know, those ugly cheap prints that you get down at the local shopping centre or buy from low quality clothing stores.
On hot days where you know you are going to be sweating (like in Durban),those large prints soak and stick to your skin and make you feel terrible.
Combat this phenomenon with cotton t-shirts that have light good quality prints.

Appropriate summer clothing is easy to get your head around…it just takes a bit of thought.
When you go to the beach don’t be like self obsessed fashion ho’s who have to look “good” when they come to the beach…you know, the ones dressed in Gucci, have an inch of face polyfila (makeup) and are petrified of touching sand.
Come to the beach relaxed and dressed comfortably.
The beach is about taking it easy and getting back to nature (even if just a little).
You can’t have a serious attitude when you come to the beach…and likewise your summer clothing style has to reflect the chilled life…if you are pretentious you will be the alien…and look like the outsider.
Saying that, there are a few beach spots that specialize in being fashionable and pretentious….case in point are beaches like Clifton 4th and Camps Bay…those spots are all about being seen and comparing designer clothing.
It’s a total abomination of what beach culture is all about, but hey that what some people like I’m afraid…I just leave them to it.

So as far as summer clothing goes, my main tips to u are: be practical, be prepared and be relaxed.
