I’ve just finished reading the well known story Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden. If you haven’t had the opportunity to read this amazing story or do the easy route and watch the movie I u urge you to do so.
This Cinderella story is filled with excitement, a well written storyline and colourful images. When reading it transports you from the here and now to the there and then. Japan 1930…A mysterious and exotic world where ladies wore kimono and attended parties for tea ceremonies, dance and the engagement of good conversation.
The story follows the life of little Sakamoto Chiyo, an extremely beautiful young Japanese girl with breathtaking blue/grey eyes. Her life is filled with beauty, pain, hardships and of course the usual love story. It’s very rare to come across a book so extraordinarily written that you feel like you are a character yourself.
Reading this book was an utterly engaging experience which I thoroughly enjoyed. And if you disagree, come find me. I’ll be the random dancing outside eSquared fashion in a kimono …

Greetings everybody.
The T of the Day is very sensitive today. I’ve decided to feature the Graphic Playground design, entitled: Shark plus Man. When you look at the design, it’s obvious why some people have let out small gasps or full blown chokes when they see it for the first time.
OK ok, so I understand why people are appalled with this design. The fact that it’s blatant (and truthful) about the reality of the sea and its more dangerous inhabitants, can be shocking to some. The fact that it comes across as humorous is also what sets people off. I had somebody in here earlier today and we spoke about the Shark plus Man design.
One of his friends is a surfer and has been attacked by a shark, leaving him in a state that is close to what the design depicts. Obviously for him it’s a sensitive subject and his heart tells him that there is nothing funny about the design at all. He then asked me if I was a surfer and what I thought of the design.
The Shark plus Man design for me was a surprise at first. Would I wear it? Yes most definitely. For me the design is quite heavy and yes in a disjointed way, it is funny. I am a surfer and I’ve grown up with this kind of issue all my life. Personally, confronting a heavy issue and laughing about it, is the key to continue doing what you love, because let’s face it, if you are scared of something and don’t face up to it, there’s very little hope that you will get past it and it will most probably develop into a phobia.
I’m not saying that you have to conquer your fear of sharks by throwing yourself into a maelstrom of teeth, but instead desensitize yourself against the fear. We South Africans definitely know a thing or two about desensitizing ourselves against fear…with the level of crime in this country it’s hard not to.
Think I’m right? Think I’m crackers? What do you all think of this very sensitive design??
