I’m sure most of you who watch the news, would have heard about the Army training accident that happened on Friday, where 9 soldiers were killed. The incident happened during a live-fire training session at the Army Combat Training Centre at Lohatlha. Its actually part of an annual event which brings together the entire SANDF, thats army, navy, airforce and military medics.
The army MK5 anti-aircraft gun, supposedly jammed early into the exercise and started a 360 degree swath of destruction. Being a anti-aircraft gun it shoots high explosive 35mm shell…..which weigh in at 0,5kg each. There is little chance of surviving something like this….it was a massacre.
How this friendly fire accident could have happened is still being investigated in a joint operation between the Defence Force itself and the police. The gun is computerized, so its been said that it may have been a technical error or computer glitch. The government is spending loads of money at the moment, to upgrade our anti-aircraft systems.
